NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera have left, Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson might not be far behind and Alex Rodriguez could be suspended for all of next season. Nick Bonino Penguins Jersey Authentic . Following the New York Yankees worst year since 1992, there are a whole lot of questions and not many answers. Manager Joe Girardi hasnt even committed to returning. "I dont know how its going to be here next year," captain Derek Jeter said after Sundays season finale. "The manager and coaches are free agents, too. Anything I would say about next year would be premature and speculation." New York finished tied for third in the AL East at 85-77, its poorest winning percentage in more than two decades. The Yankees were 12 games back of first-place Boston and six games behind Tampa Bay, which forced a tiebreaker for the second AL wild card. "The franchise knows what they have to do," said Cano, who may seek $300 million or more as a free agent. "They seem to make the team better every single year. Im just going to go on vacation and go home and see the family and see where we are." For a team that treats early-round playoff games as routine, missing the post-season for only the second time in 19 years was a shock. The only new memories created were tear-filled exits. "Andy and Mo, goes without saying how special that was," Jeter said. "But on the field, it wasnt memorable." New Yorks high point of 12 games over .500 was reached on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, when a win at Tampa Bay increased the Yankees record to 30-18. By early August they hit their midseason nadir at 57-56. Not for a single game did New York put its envisioned lineup on the field. After breaking his left ankle in the AL championship series opener against Detroit last October, Jeter didnt return until July 11 and went right back on the DL with a tight right quadriceps. He came back late in the month but played in only four games before a strained right calf caused a third DL stint. After just 17 games overall this year, his season was cut short on Sept. 11 because of another injury to the left ankle. Jeters final totals for 2013: a .190 average, one homer and seven RBIs. Coming off left hip surgery in January, Rodriguez didnt make his season debut until Aug. 5 -- the day he was given a 211-game suspension by Major League Baseball for alleged violations of the sports drug agreement and labour contract. Playing while his penalty was under appeal, he hit .244 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 44 games and missed the final four because of sore legs. "Im really looking forward to at least one full off-season of hardcore training," he said. "I havent had that in quite a long time." Mark Teixeira partially tore the tendon sheath in his right wrist while with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. The All-Star first baseman made his season debut on May 31, then aggravated the injury June 15 and opted for surgery on July 2. His season amounted to a .151 average with three homers and 12 RBIs in 15 games. And in his last season before free agency, Granderson hit.229 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 61 games. His right forearm was broken on Feb. 24 in his first spring training plate appearance when he was hit by a pitch from Torontos J.A. Happ. Granderson returned May 14, but in his eighth game back his left pinkie was broken May 24 by a pitch from Tampa Bays Cesar Ramos. The outfielder didnt appear in another big league game until Aug. 2. Even the replacements got hurt. Kevin Youkilis didnt play after June 13 because of a lumbar spine sprain. Eduardo Nunez was out from early May until July with a left oblique strain. Francisco Cervellis season ended April 26 when a foul ball off the bat of Torontos Rajai Davis broke his right hand. The catcher also was suspended in the Biogenesis drug scandal. New York used a team-record 56 players as 21 went on the disabled list for a total of 28 stints, causing 1,493 missed days, STATS said. The injuries and the departures of Raul Ibanez, Nick Swisher, Russell Martin and Eric Chavez as free agents caused a massive power outage. Home runs dropped from a team-record 245 last year to 144, the Yankees fewest in a non-shortened season since they hit 130 in 1989. Not counting strike years, it was the largest falloff in baseball history, according to STATS, topping a decrease of 96 for the 1988 Chicago Cubs. "I think we need more offence overall," Girardi said. Fourteen players are potentially eligible for free agency, including Phil Hughes (4-14), Hiroki Kuroda (11-13 after losing his last six decisions) and relievers Boone Logan and Joba Chamberlain. Jeter is expected to exercise his $9.5 million player option. Cano, the teams best offensive player, may opt to take a higher offer if the Yankees attempt to show fiscal restraint. Theyd like to get under the $189 million threshold for the luxury tax next season, which includes space for about $177 million in player salaries. "Ive just got to wait and see to decide if its stressful or how it is. I cannot really tell you because Ive never been in that situation," Cano said. CC Sabathia remains a concern after going 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA, 76th among 81 qualifying pitchers. The ace missed his final turn in the rotation because of a strained left hamstring. "I know a lot of people have written me off," he said. Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann seems to be a possible target in the free-agent market. The pitching staff could be overhauled. But if the new guys get hurt, the Yankees might struggle again. "I dont care who the guys are in that room," Girardi said. "When you put the uniform on, youre a big league player and I believe you have a chance to make the post-season." Paul Martin Penguins Jersey Authentic . The collision was as common as any in racing. Kevin Ward Jr.s car spun twice like a top, wheels hugging the wall, before it plopped backward on the dimly lit dirt track. In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, the 20-year-old Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. He gestured, making his disgust evident with the driver who triggered the wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, who continues to race in sprint cars on dirt tracks. Many NASCAR drivers, including Stewart, got their start on the short ovals. Ward, a relative unknown compared to NASCARs noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewarts direction. As he confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck. Ward was standing to the right of Stewarts familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Ward was sucked underneath the car and hurtled through the air before landing on his back as fans looked on in horror. Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sundays NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, hours after Saturdays crash. And the sport was left reeling from a tragedy that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to weeknight dirt track racing. "There arent words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.," Stewart said in a statement. There was no immediate decision if Stewart would drive in this weekends NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway. Stewart "will have as much time as he needs to make that decision," spokesman Mike Arning said Monday. "It is still an emotional time for all involved, Tony included. He is grieving, and grief doesnt have a timetable." Arning said Stewarts extra-curricular racing plans are on hold until further notice. Plymouth Speedway in Warsaw, Indiana, said on its website that Stewart would no longer compete in Saturdays race. Canandaigua Speedway promoter Jeremie Corcoran said Monday the track has cancelled Wednesdays event to give "my family, staff, fans, and racing teams time to grieve and process all that has occurred." Authorities questioned the 43-year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Watkins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. They described him as "visibly shaken" after the crash and said he was co-operative. On Sunday, Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators also dont have any evidence at this point in the investigation to support criminal intent. But he also said that criminal charges have not been ruled out. Povero said on Monday there were no plans "at this time" to talk to Stewart again. There is no timetable as to when the investigation will conclude or autopsy results will be finished, he said. The crash raised several questions: Will Wards death cause drivers to think twice about on-track confrontations? Did Stewart try and send hhis own message by buzzing Ward, only to have his risky move turn fatal? Or did Ward simply take his life into his own hands by stepping into traffic in a black firesuit on a dark track? The only one who may have that answer is Stewart. Brian Dumoulin Penguins Jersey. David Weinsten, a former state and federal prosecutor in Miami who is now in private practice, said it would be difficult to prove criminal intent. "I think even with the video, its going to be tough to prove that this was more than just an accident and that it was even culpable negligence, which he shouldve known or shouldve believed that by getting close to this guy, that it was going to cause the accident," he said. The sheriff renewed a plea for spectators to turn over photos and videos of the crash. Investigators were reconstructing the accident and looking into everything from the dim lighting on a portion of the track to how muddy it was, as well as if Wards dark firesuit played a role in his death, given the conditions. Driver Cory Sparks, a friend of Wards, was a few cars back when Ward was killed. "The timing was unsafe," he said of Wards decision to get out of his car to confront Stewart. "When your adrenaline is going, and youre taken out of a race, your emotions flare." Its often just a part of racing. Drivers from mild-mannered Jeff Gordon to Danica Patrick have erupted in anger on the track at another driver. The confrontations are part of the sports allure: Fans love it and cheer wildly from the stands. Stewart, who has a reputation for being a hothead nicknamed "Smoke," once wound up like a pitcher and tossed his helmet like a fastball at Matt Kenseths windshield. "Ive seen it many times in NASCAR, where a driver will confront the other one, and a lot of times theyll try to speed past them. And thats what it appeared to me as if what Tony Stewart did, he tried to speed past Ward," witness Michael Messerly said. "And the next thing I could see, I didnt see Ward any more. It just seemed like he was suddenly gone." The crash also raised questions about whether Stewart will continue with his hobby of racing on small tracks on the side of the big-money NASCAR races. He has long defended his participation in racing on tracks like the one where the crash happened, even as accidents and injury have put his day job in NASCAR at risk. Saturdays crash came almost exactly a year after Stewart suffered a compound fracture to his right leg in a sprint car race in Iowa. The injury cost him the second half of the NASCAR season and sidelined him during the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. Stewart only returned to sprint track racing last month. The crash site is the same track where Stewart was involved in a July 2013 accident that seriously injured a 19-year-old driver. He later took responsibility for his car making contact with another and triggering the 15-car accident that left Alysha Ruggles with a compression fracture in her back. "Everybody has hobbies," he said last month, adding that "there are a lot of other things I could be doing that are a lot more dangerous and a lot bigger waste of time with my time off do than doing that."
